Fantasy fiction books hold an unrivaled position as one of the most beloved genres worldwide, and personally, it's my absolute favorite. Consequently, I find myself frequently delving into online research, eager to discover the crème de la crème of fantastic fiction. Back in 2017, I created my inaugural compilation of the "Best Fantasy Books of All Time." The Ultimate Collection: 30 Extraordinary Fantasy Books, Novels, and Legendary Series of All Time

I'm an avid follower of my own curated list and make it a point to indulge in fantastic fiction from time to time. The primary motivation behind creating this list was to craft a personalized collection of the "must-read best fantasy books of all time" for my own enjoyment and guidance. While there are numerous similar lists scattered across different websites, I embarked on the task armed with an extensive inventory of nearly 200 fantasy novels and books. However, after meticulous consideration, only 30 exceptional works earned a coveted spot on my list. These selections were carefully chosen to ensure that they represent the pinnacle of the fantasy genre.

Nevertheless, I wholeheartedly welcome suggestions for additional titles that you, as fellow fantasy enthusiasts, have read and cherished. If there are any fantasy books that have captivated you and you believe deserve a place on this list, I invite you to kindly leave a comment and enlighten me about them. I am eagerly receptive to fresh and exciting book recommendations. Without further ado, here is my meticulously curated list of must-read fantasy books:

30 best fantasy books, novels, and book series of all time

To keep the list current and incorporate the latest and greatest fantasy books, I conducted thorough research and updated it in 2022. I also made additions in 2023 and 2024 to ensure it remains up to date with the evolving genre.

1. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien (1937 – 1955)

30 best fantasy books, novels, and book series of all time

One of the best works in fantastic fiction literature is The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It is an epic high fantasy novel by J. R. R. Tolkien, a British writer, and scholar. The story of the novel is set in a world called Middle-earth. The story of The Lord of the Rings trilogy is also a sequel to another Tolkien book The Hobbit.  The Lord of the Rings is one of the best-selling books in the world. The movie adaptation of the series also played an important role to make this series very popular.

I can say that my fantasy fiction reading adventure started with J.R.R. Tolkien and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. I got interested in reading this book after watching the first movie of the series: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001). Read all the books long before the second and third movies were released. Already knew more about Tolkien’s Middle-earth. After reading the books what I wondered most was how “Ents” (a race that looks like trees) will look in the movie. Of course, the movies were good but better to read books and then watch them. Now new  The Lord of the Rings television series also coming out.

Must say that Tolkien’s fantasy novel “The Hobbit” is also connected to the series. The book tells the story of Bilbo Baggins, his adventures, and how he got the ring that we see in the name of the trilogy.

List of The Lord of the Rings book series:

  • The Hobbit (Book 0, 1937)
  • The Fellowship of the Ring (Book 1, 1954)
  • The Two Towers (Book 2, 1954)
  • The Return of the King (Book 3, 1955)

30 best fantasy books, novels, and book series of all time

One of the best fantasy series of all time is The Earthsea Cycle by American writer Ursula K. Le Guin. Also known as Earthsea. It is a series of high fantasy books. Le Guin started this series as a trilogy but then added some more books. Later all books were published in a single volume called The Books of Earthsea.

Once you will start this series, you won’t be able to put the books down. The story of the protagonist “Sparrowhawk” will take you to the magical world of Earthsea, the world of islands, and more. Until now I read the first three books, the original trilogy, and now I feel like reading the rest and even read all the books of Ursula K. Le Guin.

3. A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin (1996 - …)

30 best fantasy books, novels, and book series of all time

A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin is an epic fantasy series. The first book of the series is A Game of Thrones novel published in 1996. Martin planned this series as a trilogy. But now after publishing 5 books, he still writes two more books. The last book published was  A Dance with Dragons, in 2011. Since then Martin is working on the sixth novel The Winds of Winter. The series takes place on the fictional continents Westeros and Essos. Three main stories tell the reader about wars between some families to control the throne. That's why the first book has the title A Game of Thrones.

“A Song of Ice and Fire” must be the most popular series on this list, because of the Game of Thrones TV series. I have a dilemma about this series. Until now only watched the TV series and had a disappointing ending. Now that it ended I also want to read the books. But one thing that stops me is that the author also failed to publish the last two books until now. So not certain if I should start reading this series before George R.R. Martin will publish the last books. Please tell me your opinion in the comments.

List of books in the Song of Ice and Fire series:

  • A Game of Thrones (Book 1, 1996)

I loved the first two books and can’t wait to read the last one. The books tell the story of a boy named Kvothe. It has a story within a story format. Kvothe tells his own story. 30 best fantasy books, novels, and book series of all time

Discworld is a fantasy comedy book series. What is amazing is that the series consist of 41 books. This is the largest fantasy book series this list has. Maybe even a record of the world. The story sets in a disk-shaped world. Before reading the series, I always wondered about the “Discworld”. The Discworld is a planet-sized flat disc carried on the backs of four elephants. These elephants also stand on the shell of gigantic sea turtles. The turtle itself floats in space. Something you should see or imagine while you read. Each book has its own story and takes you to a world with magic, wizards, heroes, and more. But don’t forget this is a comedy fantasy.

While I read the first book, I found myself enjoying and laughing more than I expected. The combination of fantasy and comedy also reminded me of another popular book series, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which is a comedy science fiction series.

The novels in The Discworld series are stand-alone books. But some books form sub-series such as Rincewind, Death, Witches, City Watch, Wizards, Tiffany Aching, and Moist von Lipwig.

The Harry Potter series is a seven-book fantasy series written by J.K. Rowling. It follows the journey of a young wizard named Harry Potter as he discovers his magical abilities, attends the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and faces numerous adventures and challenges.

The fantasy world J.K. Rowling built in her Harry Potter Series is amazing. It is almost 20 years since I first started reading this series, and can say I am a big fan. Most readers will find more than one character in these books to bond with.

Some may say that this is just young adult fiction. But in my opinion, it is more than that. The first few books might be about a kid who lost his parents. But later the series turns into a fight between good and evil, right and wrong. Where characters choose their side. Some will stand along with powerful evil, and some will stand with relatively weak, but with the right cause. For me, the last book is like a novel standing up to a tyrant and tyranny.

I'm always ashamed to admit I haven't read Lord of the Rings. But I have read the Silmarillion (lol!). Thanks for this list. Not only is it full of good recommendations, but it's a really helpful resource for putting the series in the right order, both as a reader and a bookseller who has to shelve these hefty tomes.

I'm sad that you didn't mention The Dune series (Frank Herbert), the Many-Coloured Land series (Julian May), or the incomparable Anathem, and other works (Neal Stephenson)

I categorise Dune as science fiction. So The Dune series (Frank Herbert), and Neal Stephenson's one book are in the best science fiction books list. You can see that list. Thanks for your comment.
