Union of Salvation (2019) – A Stunning Epic That Brings Russian History to Life

Union of Salvation (2019) – A Stunning Epic That Brings Russian History to Life

Union of Salvation is a movie showing what happened in 1825 in the Russian Empire, telling the story of the Decembrist revolt—one of the most important events in Russian history . I think this movie is important because it tells us the story of one of the most significant political and military events in Russian history, served as an example for later revolts, and in this way shaped Russia's future—and also impacted world history.

What I liked most about this movie is how it brings history to life on screen. Seeing those events unfold on Senate Square in Saint Petersburg—different regiments standing against each other, some supporting the revolt, others supporting the new Tsar Nicholas—was amazing . The costume designs and how they reflected the period's army uniforms were also impressive.

My rating? 7 out of 10. Let's break down why.

The Plot: Russia's First Modern Political Rebellion

Union of Salvation (2019) – A Stunning Epic That Brings Russian History to Life

The Decembrist Revolt of 1825 was Russia's first modern political rebellion . Led by upper-class military officers inspired by Enlightenment ideals encountered during the Napoleonic Wars, these elite rebels sought to abolish serfdom, establish a constitutional government, and end absolute tsarist rule .

The background of this revolt is fascinating. When Tsar Alexander I died in 1825 without a legal heir, his brother Constantine secretly refused the throne, leaving the crown to the youngest brother, Nicholas. Because this refusal was kept secret, a chaotic three-week period followed where both brothers mistakenly swore loyalty to each other. The Decembrist rebels capitalized on this confusion, falsely claiming that Nicholas was stealing the throne from Constantine to convince soldiers to join their uprising .

The film shows in detail both the Decembrist uprising on Senate Square in Saint Petersburg and the uprising of the Chernigov Infantry Regiment in Ukraine . The story focuses heavily on Sergey Muravyov-Apostol (Leonid Bichevin) , a podpolkovnik of the Chernigov Regiment, following his childhood, army life, and love life . Muravyov-Apostol and his fellow conspirators—including Pavel Pestel, Kondraty Ryleyev, and Mikhail Bestuzhev-Ryumin—were ultimately hanged in the summer of 1826, their ropes snapping in a botched execution .

What Works: Historical Scale, Visuals, and Educational Value

Union of Salvation (2019) – A Stunning Epic That Brings Russian History to Life

The Scale and Production: The film is high-budgeted and offers beautiful, varied landscapes of the Russian Empire's provinces, magnificent scenes of St Petersburg, epic combat sequences, and an atmosphere similar to adaptations of War and Peace . The costume design and attention to period uniforms are impressive.

The Historical Education: For me, it's important because it tells a story of real events and shows how they happened. One thing is reading about it in books; another is seeing it through cinema, which makes you remember it more and can even ignite interest to learn more.

The Cast: The cast is talented and consists of a number of popular Russian actors, including Leonid Bichevin, Maksim Matveyev, and Anton Shagin . Bichevin's performance as the conflicted Muravyov-Apostol is a strong anchor for the narrative.

What Doesn't Work: Confusing Narrative and Weak Character Development

Union of Salvation (2019) – A Stunning Epic That Brings Russian History to Life

The Confusing Story: The film tries to cover and connect events that occurred between 1814 and 1825. The timeline, locations, and characters constantly change . Some parts of the events are not clearly conveyed to the viewer, and it's sometimes difficult to tell who is who . Viewers have described the plot as "disjointed" and the editing as making the story lose consistency .

Weak Character Development: While Muravyov-Apostol is central, other characters' development is poor . The film overwhelms viewers with many similar-looking protagonists who do not have enough screen time for the audience to become familiar with them naturally through action and dialogue .

The Music: The contemporary rock-inspired music by Nautilus Pompilius has been described as not matching the 19th-century scenery . One reviewer called it a "bizarre" decision for a period drama .

The Gender Imbalance: Unlike the classic 1975 Soviet film Star of Captivating Happiness, this film largely omits the stories of the Decembrists' wives . The film focuses almost entirely on male characters, and removing the female characters would not change the narrative coherence .

The Propaganda Debate: Some critics have noted the film's political undertones, with interpretations ranging from a glorification of tsarist power to a warning against rebellion . However, the film is also considered more historically nuanced and balanced than many critics expected .

The Ratings: A Divisive Reception

Union of Salvation (2019) – A Stunning Epic That Brings Russian History to Life

IMDb: 5.2/10 (from just 1,800 users)

Kinopoisk (Russian site): 5.9/10 (from more than 120,000 users)

Rotten Tomatoes: No critics' score available (not enough reviews)

This is a film that was better received in its home country than internationally, likely due to its historical and cultural context. The low international rating on IMDb, from a small sample, doesn't fully reflect its Russian audience reception.

Final Verdict: A 7/10 Historical Epic Worth Watching

★★★★★★★☆☆☆ (7/10)

I loved this movie because it tells a story of real events and shows how they happened. It teaches us history. But some aspects are weak—the confusing narrative, weak character development, and uneven music.

Even so, I think it's a must-watch for anyone interested in Russian history, the Decembrists, or epic historical dramas. The scale alone makes it worth seeing. My rating: 7 out of 10.

Recommendation: Read a little about the Decembrists (at least their Wikipedia page) before watching—it will help you appreciate the odds they were up against and the sacrifice they made that much more.
