The Beekeeper (2024) – More Than Just Another Jason Statham Action Movie
When I first saw this movie, I jumped to some scenes—mostly the action scenes—and said to myself: just a regular Statham movie for action. I must confess that I was wrong. Now I sat down and properly watched it. And I must say it has high-octane action scenes plus deep meanings that make us think.
First of all, Jason Statham is again amazing with his action scenes and didn't disappoint. But this movie is not just about the punches and explosions. It's about something much bigger.
The Plot: A Retired Assassin, A Scam, and A Brutal Campaign
Adam Clay (Jason Statham) lives a quiet, peaceful life as a beekeeper. He rents a barn from a kind-hearted elderly woman named Eloise Parker (Phylicia Rashad). She's sweet, generous, and trusts everyone. One day, she falls victim to a sophisticated phishing scam. Her entire life savings—over $2 million—are stolen. Charities she supported lose their funding. The financial devastation is too much. She takes her own life.
Clay discovers her body. And something inside him awakens.
He is not just a beekeeper. He was once part of a powerful, clandestine organization known as "The Beekeepers" —a group that operates outside the law to protect the hive. Their motto? Protect the hive at all costs. Now, the hive is society. And the scammers who destroyed Eloise's life are the pests.
What follows is a brutal, one-man campaign of vengeance. Clay systematically dismantles the entire scam operation—from the low-level call center workers to the corrupt executives to the powerful people protecting them. Including, eventually, the President of the United States.
What Is "The Beekeeper"? A Clever Fictional Concept
The idea of "The Beekeeper" is something new for me. Somewhat fictional, but worth watching and thinking about. In this universe, Beekeepers are not actual beekeepers. They are a secret, extra-governmental organization that answers to no one. Their purpose is to protect the "hive"—society—from threats that normal law enforcement cannot handle. They operate outside the constitution, outside the law, and outside morality. They are the final line of defense.
When Clay reveals his past, the FBI is terrified. They know that once a Beekeeper is activated, nothing can stop him. He will burn down the entire system to protect the hive.
The Themes: Corruption, Democracy, and Scam Culture
This movie has deeper meanings hidden inside an action film. That's why we already see that a sequel is coming in 2027.
First: The vulnerability of so-called democracies. The film shows how democracies are vulnerable—or most of the time, not even real democracies. Whoever pays more for election campaigns wins. In this movie, we have a president with a similar story. Even she didn't know where her campaign money really came from. Behind the scenes, there is a corrupt system and dirty money. A private intelligence firm, run by her own son, runs a massive phishing network, stealing billions from ordinary people. The president claims to be a reformer, but her campaign was funded by the very criminals she pretends to fight.
Second: Scam calls and phishing schemes. Those scam calls, scam schemes that target people to steal their money—especially elderly people and those who don't know much about computers and can be easily scammed. This is a very timely topic that the movie shows to its viewers and warns us about. At least people who watch this movie will know more about these scam schemes and can be more cautious about them. The film highlights how sophisticated these operations have become—call centers that look like legitimate businesses, scripts designed to manipulate emotions, and a complete lack of accountability.
Third: The question of justice. When the system fails, who steps in? Is vigilante justice ever justified? The film doesn't give easy answers, but it makes you think.
The Performances: Statham at His Best
Jason Statham is again amazing. He delivers brutal, visceral action sequences that rank among the best of his career. But there's also a quiet sadness to his performance—a man who has seen too much, lost too much, and has nothing left to lose.
Phylicia Rashad is heartbreaking as Eloise. Her screen time is brief, but her performance gives the entire film its emotional weight.
Josh Hutcherson plays the smug, entitled son of the president—a villain you love to hate.
Jeremy Irons brings gravitas as a former CIA director who warns the president about the danger Clay represents.
The Action: High-Octane and Brutal
David Ayer, who directed Fury and wrote Training Day, knows how to shoot action. The fight scenes are grounded, brutal, and satisfying. No wirework. No CGI nonsense. Just Statham doing what he does best. The final confrontation at the president's compound is a masterclass in escalating tension.
The Ratings: Critics Mixed, Audiences Loved It
- IMDb: 6.3/10 (from 180,000 users)
- Rotten Tomatoes: 71% Critics / 92% Audience
- Budget: 40 million
- BoxOffice: 162.6 million worldwide
Critics were decently positive—71% is a solid score. But audiences loved it. A 92% audience score proves that this film connected with viewers. They appreciated the action, the timely social commentary, and Statham's performance.
Financially, it was a major success. Earning over 162million on a40 million budget is a clear win for Amazon MGM Studios.
The Sequel: The Beekeeper 2 (2027)
Because of this success, a sequel has been greenlit. The Beekeeper 2 is scheduled for theatrical release on January 15, 2027. Jason Statham will return. David Ayer is expected to return as director. The story will likely explore more of the secret Beekeeper organization and its role in protecting the hive.
Final Verdict: A 7/10 Action Film With a Brain
My rating is 7 out of 10. Good, fun action with thought-provoking deep meanings. This is not just a regular Statham movie. It has something to say about corruption, democracy, and the vulnerability of the elderly in the digital age. It's a film that entertains you while also warning you. Watch it. Enjoy the action. And then double-check your own parents aren't falling for phishing scams.
Recommendation: If you love Jason Statham action films, you'll love this one. If you're interested in social commentary wrapped in an action package, you'll appreciate it even more.
