Lethal Weapon TV Series Review: Two Great Seasons, Then It Goes Off a Cliff
So, remember the Lethal Weapon movies? Mel Gibson jumping off buildings, Danny Glover being "too old for this ****" lots of explosions? Good times.
When they announced a TV reboot, everyone rolled their eyes. But weirdly? It worked. For a while.
Then it all fell apart. Let me explain.
The Short Version (For the Impatient)
- Seasons 1-2: Legit fun. Worth your time.
- Season 3: A train wreck. Skip it.
- Overall: 3.5/5, but only because the good stuff is really good.
What's This Show About?
Same setup as the movies. Martin Riggs is a crazy cop whose wife died. He's reckless, sad, and honestly kind of a mess. Roger Murtaugh is the older family man who just wants to grill steaks and not get shot.
They get paired up. Chaos happens. Guns fire. Cars flip. You know the drill.
The Good Stuff (Seasons 1-2)
Clayne Crawford is legit great.
Look, no one replaces Mel Gibson. But Crawford doesn't try to. His Riggs is more broken, more raw, and honestly? More interesting. You actually worry about him. That's good acting.
The action surprises you.
For a network TV show? The stunts are ridiculous. Real car crashes. Real punches. It feels closer to a cheap action movie than a polished CBS crime show. That's a compliment.
The chemistry works.
Crawford and Damon Wayans bicker like an old married couple. Wayans gets actual funny lines. When the show clicks, you forget you're watching a reboot. That's rare.
The Disaster (Season 3)
Okay, here's where it gets messy.
Behind the scenes drama killed everything.
Clayne Crawford got fired. Reports said he was difficult on set. Yelling. Safety issues. Whatever happened, the show dumped him.
Then they did something stupid.
They killed Riggs off-screen. And brought in Seann William Scott (Stifler from American Pie) as a new wildcard character named Cole.
Does it work?
Nope. Not even a little.
Damon Wayans looks like he'd rather be anywhere else. The new guy tries hard, but he's not Riggs. The jokes feel forced. The action gets watered down. It's like a cover band playing your favorite song badly.
And here's the worst part: The show ends on a cliffhanger. Then it got canceled. So you get zero closure.
Final Verdict (No BS)
Watch Seasons 1-2 if: You like buddy cop shows, you've run out of Castle episodes, or you want to see a genuinely good performance from Clayne Crawford.
Skip Season 3 unless: You're morbidly curious or you really love Seann William Scott. Even then, lower your expectations.
Best way to watch: Binge Seasons 1-2. Then watch the first episode of Season 3. If you hate it (you will), just read a plot summary online and move on with your life.
Rating: Seasons 1-2 get a solid 4/5. Season 3 gets a 2/5 and a side-eye.
